Schwarz seeks to establish a dialogue between recent and traditional theories of literature. Stressing that literary works are written by human authors, about human subjects, and for human readers, he argues that reading must be understood as a transaction between texts and readers. Calling for a pluralistic approach, he shows how each reader belongs to multiple interpretive communities and that an ethical reading depends on our awareness of our critical assumptions. While not abandoning formalism, Schwarz argues for the necessity of understanding the author, the historical contexts in which the author wrote, and the anterior reality that a text represents. Throughout, Schwarz draws upon a wide range of contemporary authors and literary critics, but uses James Joyce frequently as his model. And in a particularly compelling chapter, he focuses on the controversy surrounding the works of Paul de Man, a major figure in deconstructive poetics who was discovered after his death to have been a Nazi collaborator.
