While taking into consideration the individual genius of writers like Pope, Gay, Swift, and Johnson, Carretta analyses the nonliterary resources available to the eighteenth~century English satirist. Contemporary political theory and rhetoric, for example, are key considerations that lead us to understand how political satirists treated anomalies such as the officially unsanctioned position of prime minister. The shift in the writing of history~from didactic uniformitarian history to historicism, the theory that each political event is unique~ also influenced the exceptional poetry and prints in the time of both Pope and Churchill. Most significantly, however, Carretta isolates the tremendous capacity of the visual arts to illuminate the development of political verse satire. He explores the common fund of Renaissance iconography inherited by eighteenth~century artists and writers, including, for example, translations and adaptations of emblem books. He discusses how the gradual breakdown of inherited traditions allowed satirists to make recognizable deviations from received forms. The conservative yet innovative nature of these passing traditions gave early Georgian England the most memorable period of political satire in English history. By investigating the shared iconographic vocabulary of verbal and visual satirists, as well as by discovering links with political rhetoric and historiography, Carretta contributes a fruitful and welcome interdisciplinary approach to eighteenth~century English studies.
