Jeffrey Talbot Richelson (31 December 1949 11 November 2017) was an American author and academic researcher who studied the process of intelligence gathering and national security. He authored at least thirteen books and many articles about intelligence, and directed the publication of several of the National Security Archive's collections of source documents. Richelson was notable for his Freedom of Information requests in order to further scholarship in intelligence and espionage. According to Bruce D. Berkowitz, Richelson gradually became trusted to the extent that he was invited to Central Intelligence Agency sponsored conferences. Richelson completed a Ph.D. in political science at the University of Rochester in 1975 and went on to teach at the University of Texas, and American University. Richelson was a senior fellow with the National Security Archive. In this updated edition, documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act provide a look at the US organizations that collect and analyze intelligence. The book examines the missions, functions, and organizational structure of all US intelligence operations. "The role of intelligence in U.S. government operations has changed dramatically and is now more critical than ever to domestic security and foreign policy. This authoritative and highly researched book written by Jeffrey T. Richelson provides a detailed overview of America's vast intelligence empire, from its organizations and operations to its management structure. Drawing from a multitude of sources, including hundreds of official documents, The U.S. Intelligence Community allows students to understand the full scope of intelligence organizations and activities, and gives valuable support to policymakers and military operations. The seventh edition has been fully revised and updated to include revamped chapters on signals intelligence and cyber collection, geospatial intelligence, and open sources and exploitation. The inclusion of more maps, tables and photos makes it an even more valuable and engaging resource for students. In addition, a new web site provides access to the documents referenced in the book and suggestions for supplementary case studies" Third Edition.[stated] First printing [stated].
