This study examines the People's Republic of China's "opening up" to foreign trade and investment from the policy's bold inception to the economic aftershocks of the Beijing massacre. Using detailed case studies and drawing on a wide range of Chinese source materials, the author provides an analysis of economic reforms in a socialist state that has turned away from many of the precepts of Marxist ideology toward a more pragmatic but still state-dominated development strategy.
