Hardcover. Black cloth, some gilt letters on spine, tan & illus. paper dust jacket, 393 pp. Part of the monumental series comprised of all of the papers and correspondence of America's first President, George Washington (1732-1799). This stand-alone volume is "an executive daybook, a day-by-day account of many of the matters that engaged the attention of the executive departments during Washington's administration. The entries cover Washington's decisions on government contracts, appointments of office, and individual departmental problems. They throw considerable light on presidential and cabinet participation in decision-making during Washington's administration. Entries relating to the War Department are of particular value because of the destruction of most of the War Department's records by fire in 1800. . Kept primariy by Washington's secretaries Tobias Lear and Bartholomew Dandridge, the Journal is written in th first person as if Washington were penning the entries himself." (dj). VG (Slight age to dj, otherwise clean.). N° de réf. du vendeur 150324

Cloth. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. First Edition. As new . This journal was started in January , 1793 and is written as if it were written by Washington . However , the manuscript material is largely in the handwriting of his two secretaries , Tobias Lear and Bartholomew Dandridge . It is clear that Washington wanted to keep a record of this kind and many of his Diary entries during the First Term resemble this journal that his secretaries maintained for the second term . The record here is fullest for 1793 and is fairly complete for 1794 with more fragmentary entries for the remaider of Washington's Presidency . It is a journal of correspondence and an executive daybook , constituting a day by day account of the activities of the executive departments . The material relative to the War Department is particularly important because most of its records were destroyed by a fire in 1800 . This Journal is also important because Washington's Diary entries for most of the period covered by the Journal have never been located . This is a very valuable record of the formative years of the American Presidency . Dust jacket is protected with a mylar cover . N° de réf. du vendeur 00399073
