Synopsis
The understanding of historical change is an important and continuing challenge for our time. This book of essays deals with particular explanations or interpretations of change in various disciplines - art history, philosophy, anthropology, and criticism and theory in literature. By illuminating how continuity and change have functioned, these essays lead us to consider the possibilities of change before us. Eight of the essays appeared earlier in a prize-winning issue of "New Literary History"; the rest are published here for the first time.
