Etat : Gut. 186 S. Unschlag leicht braunfleckig und mit leichten Randläsuren und etwas beschabt, innen gut und sauber - One of the most striking characteristics of Machiavellfs works is his abiding interest in impressive figures of history, men whose exemplary actions or words aroused his quick imagination. The tendency to see historical events as the exclusive dominion of an active historical protagonist and to modify or reshape the description of such events in order better to portray the individual's distinctive traits is a basic element of Machiavellfs art. None of Machiavellfs writings are coldly abstract treatises on the nature of political power. All reflect the imagination with which their author was endowed. The important place Machiavelli gives in his works to the characterization of individuals who aroused his interest - actors on the stage of human history and examples, as he saw them, to be followed or avoided in one's political behavior - is one reason why his works attract contemporary readers. This interest first appears quite naturally with his writings from his first practical political experiences as an ambassador for the Florentine republic. His diplomatic correspondence shows in an embryonic form his descriptions of historical figures - Cesare Borgia, Pope Julius II, and Louis XII - who are later treated in his more famous works. It is there also that we can grasp several of the stylistic traits of Machiavellfs presentation of character.
