Synopsis

The imminent completion of the European internal market and the unprecedented political and economic transformation of central and eastern European countries will undoubtedly continue to affect the world economy in the years and decades ahead.
The spheres of influence of the EEC, EFTA and the former CMEA will gravitate towards each other, overlap and perhaps coalesce, as new forms of international cooperation emerge, no longer based on opposing blocks of power but on mutual trust and converging interests.
The papers in this book examine the changes and the problems emerging in the new Europe, assess some of the forces at work and discuss various outcomes and solutions. Among the areas covered are the labour market, including migration, unemployment, bargaining and industrial relations; the integration of eastern Europe in the new Europe; the role of the private sector in saving, and of the public sector in mobilising domestic financial resources; the fiscal policy of the single European Market; competition policy, the diffusion of technology and the institutional framework; and lastly the effects of the new Europe on the rest of the world and particularly on developing countries.
