Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Etat : FINE. Etat de la jaquette : NEAR FINE. 215pp. Sewn binding in yellow cloth. Sound, unmarked copy; DJ with a short tear to spine head and front head, crisp and clean otherwise. 'Buccaneer homosexuality existed in a society where homosexual behavior was not only accepted but was indeed regarded as the basic norm-that is the argument of Richard Burg's original and fascinating account of the seventeenth-century Caribbean. Unlike the homosexuality of other all-male groupings-such as for example that of prisoners, subject as the latter are to rules and regulations and oppressive supervision-seventeenth-century pirates existed, Burg argues, in an environment where homosexuality was encouraged by the very conditions of life. Sodomy and the Perception of Evil is thus a highly original and closely argued reinterpretation of the colonial English Caribbean. It draws extensively on the historical material available on Stuart England and the Carib-bean. Burg pulls this material together skillfully and he carefully and persuasively uses it to examine how it is that homosexual conduct is influenced, directed, and even controlled or dominated by social orientation-and how it is that the expectations surrounding stated sexual preference affect the behavior of group members. It is not too much to say that the image of the Caribbean corsairs is likely to be permanently altered once this book becomes the standard account of piracy in the great days of sail. Weaving sodomy, buccaneering and men-at-war into one coherent account of Caribbean piracy is already a substantial achievement. That it is done, as it is here, in a way that makes it as fascinating as any of the great maritime adventures in history or in fiction makes this an extraordinary book in-deed, of interest to scholars of the period and those interested in the history of sexuality as well as to laymen interested in seafaring and the world of piracy.'.
