It describes how such everyday things as pottery, glass and metal vessels and iron tools were made, as well as works of art such as marble sculptures, bronze statues and gold jewellery. Spinning and weaving, plastering and painting walls, laying mosaics and minting coins are among other subjects treated. Each chapter has been written by an author who has made a special study of his subject. Since the ancient written sources provide only a slim guide to the methods employed, these studies have involved the careful examination of a great variety of surviving objects which are here extensively illustrated with drawings and photographs. The book is edited by the late Donald Strong who was Professor of Archaeology of the Roman Provinces at the Institute of Archaeology in London, and David Brown who is an Assistant Keeper rn the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
