Originally published in 1905, this long out-of-print edition re-introduces a collection of 22 Delaware Indian stories, now complemented with a sample of corresponding picture writing and other illustrations. Adams (1864- 1921), the tribe's legal representative in Washington, DC, sought to record, preserve, and promote the understanding of Native American traditions. Appendixes contain four stories re-translated into Lenape and their transliteration (e.g. "The Hunter and the Owl"). No index. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

Excerpt from Legends of the Delaware Indians and Picture Writing
The following story is often related to the Delaware Indian chil iren to show to the little boys that they should be as careful in the selection and use of their words as they are in the selection of their arrows to shoot at a mark, for very often as much mischief is done by the wrong impression being conveyed by a sentence as there is in an arrow going astray when you most desire it to strike the mark.
The difficulty in literally translating a story from one language to another, and especially from the Indian tongue to the English, will make it hard to convey to the reader of this story the real sense of humor that the Indian children see in it when it is told to them.
