Heflin (American Indian literature, Kansas City Kansas Comm. Coll.) examines five of the most prominent Native American writers all of them Sioux from the turn of the century: Charles Eastman, Gertrude Bonnin, Luther Standing Bear, Nicholas Black Elk, and Ella DeLoria. Featured are publishing chronologies of the Sioux (1893-1954) and of other tribes (1891-1946), and the always pleasurable format of footnotes instead of endnotes. Heflin tells these writers' stories, showing them to be products of two cultures and to have influenced Euro-American culture in terms of identity, appreciation of nature, acceptance of alternative religions and medical practices, recognition of oral traditions, and a sense of multiculturalism. Heflin's particular contribution here is nudging the Sioux pantheon toward inclusion into the standard American literary canon. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
