Cloth, gilt cover-title, 4to, 29 cm, 326 pp. From the 'Editor's Note': 'This volume of the Bibliography of American Fiction includes 106 author entries compiled by 83 contributors. Alphabetically arranged, the author entries deal with American fiction through 1865. If the first significant work of fiction by an author was published before 1865, that author is treated in this volume. The entries range from the colonial period to the American Renaissance, with the majority treating writers of the early nineteenth century. The author entries are independent of one another, but from the volume as a whole, the reader can gain insight into the development of American fiction from its inception to its greater maturity before the Civil War. In addition to primary bibliographies, BAF provides a headnote for each author and a selective listing of significant secondary criticism. . In the case of figures generally regarded as major authors (e.g., Melville, Hawthorne, Poe), entries have been prepared by specialists who have selected the most significant pieces of criticism on their subjects. In these cases, the purpose was to provide a selection of important secondary criticism rather than to do basic research that supplements existing primary bibliographies. In other cases, however, entries do represent the fruits of research that disclose items not listed in previous bibliographies (e.g., Sylvester Judd and Joseph Holt Ingraham). The intended audience for this volume consists of teachers, graduate students, and advanced under- graduates who are sufficiently interested in American fiction to want and need basic information on its early development. For these readers, the headnotes, primary listings, and selective secondary listings will provide direction to further sources of information and to more substantial discussions of individual authors and their contexts. These readers will also find the General Bibliography: Reference & Research Works a helpful starting point for investigation of fiction of the antebellum era. " Near Very Good.
