Book Description

Thomas Carlyle was an important and highly influential writer, thinker, and critic, the author of numerous books and pamphlets on political, historical, and social issues as well as on literature (especially German literature) and philosophy, and the famous History of the French Revolution (Oxford Paperbacks, June 1989). A full bibliography of his writings is long overdue, and is admirably supplied by this detailed and meticulous volume in the Soho Bibliographies series. It covers
all Carlyle's published writings (though an appendix also lists the principal books about him), including any works of recent scholarship which contain something by Carlyle published for the first time. In the main section, containing a chronological listing of all books, pamphlets, and broadsides wholly or substantially by Carlyle, each entry is prefaced by a facsimile of the title-page and, where relevant, a facsimile of the copyright page. In this section all printings and subsequent
reprintings of all editions, in any language, up to 1880 (the last full year of his life) are given; all posthumous first editions, and subsequent reprintings of the first editions are given up to and including 1987. Subsequent sections include listings of publications of Carlyle's material in journals and newspapers, miscellaneous and collected editions and matter attributed to him. Unusually in a bibliography of this sort, the writings of Jane Carlyle, his wife, are also included, since some
were edited by Carlyle, and nearly all are relevant to his work. There is a full index.
