Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. No Jacket. This Garland Folklore Library edition of this title is very scarce, possibly rare. Probable first edition, originally presented as the author's doctoral thesis at Indiana University in 1961. Binding is pristine - clean, unmarked, unsoiled, unstained, bright, tight, unworn - except for a very mild bump to bottom rear corner and an almost invisible, very lightly faded 1x1.5 inch area on rear where a label may have been removed. Small label at bottom left corner of front pastedown, otherwise entire interior is pristine, with no markings, soiling, creased or torn leaves. Book is either unread or read only once, very carefully. The publisher chose this particular, previously unpublished dissertation for publication as an "outstanding dissertation in folklore which warrants a wider readership and belongs in the library of any educational institution or individual with a serious interest in folklore." Chapter headings: Introduction; Summary of the Combinations of Narrative Elements in the Versions; Type 901: Historic-Geographic Study; Type 901: The Northern-European Elaborated Subtype and Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew; Type 901: "That's Once," the American Subtype; Type 1370 and the Combination 1370 and 901; Other Tales in the Complex; Summary of Conclusions.
