The first publication of a series of lectures delivered by the 19th-century American painter to the New York Athenaeum in 1826, soon after he became president of the National Academy of Design. The four lectures marked an important step in the development of the artistic profession in the United States. Because Morse's audience was more familiar with literature and science than with painting, his strategy in these lectures was to explain the principles of painting, rather than the technicalities, by comparing them with the principles of other arts. In this edition of the lectures, Cikovsky presents an accurate text, gives extensive notes, and provides the many textual alterations that Morse made in the lectures as he continued to present them to other audiences for nearly two decades.

Hardcover with dust jacket. Etat : Gut. 145 p. Dust jacket slightly rubbed, with a tear, otherwise a good copy without markings. - The recent sale of Samuel F. B. Morse's painting Gallery of the Louvre for $3.25 million, perhaps the most ever paid for an American painting, is an indication of the increasing awareness among the public and the art community of Morse's im- portance as an artist. A major part of that career as an artist was the series of lec- tures, published here for the first time, that Morse originally delivered for the New York Athenaeum in 1826, soon af- ter he became the first president of the National Academy of Design. Represent- ing the first critical discussion of painting by a practicing artist in America, the four lectures marked an important step in the development of the artistic profession in the United States and are a significant resource for the study of American art and culture. Because Morse's audience was more familiar with literature and science than with painting, his strategy in these lec- tures was to explain the principles of painting, rather than the technicalities, by comparing them with the principles of other arts. He intended to instruct his audience, hoping to enlighten patronage and create in America the conditions in which high art would find encourage- ment. In this edition of the lectures, Cikovsky presents an accurate text, gives extensive notes, and provides the many textual al- terations that Morse made in the lectures as he continued to present them to other audiences for nearly two decades. Many of the works of art to which Morse refers as well as several of Morse's own works are illustrated in the text. / Contents Acknowledgments, Editor's Introduction, Lectures Lecture 1, Lecture 2, Lecture 3, Lecture 4, Text Alterations, Appendix 1, Appendix 2, Appendix 3, Chronology of Morse's Artistic Life, Bibliography, Index.
