Albuquerque's character, as Porice sees it, comes from the land around it, the river running through it, and the ancient cultures that still surround it. The city has a strong identity of its own with which it is constantly in danger of losing touch because of the ravages of rapid growth In discusing these themes Price toches on a variety of issues that are of vital importance not just to Albuquerque but to other cities whose identity and quality of life are endangered by growth: the need for a coherent self-image, the role of historic preservations as both a preserver and a destroyer of vernacular culture, the problems of urban planning, and the challenge of creating culturally sustaining archituecture.
