First of all, it is, to the bets of my kno wledge, the only book in which students and teachers of French literature will f ind so much up-to-date information, in English, on all French authors, from the very first writers of Chansons de Geste and Romans Courtois to Jean-Paul Sar tre and Françoise Sagan. Secondly, it contains not only summaries of ever y important French work but also motivated reasons why each work was selected in the first place. It also gives much needed definitions of literary terms such a s drame, enjambement, pràciosità, etc. Thirdly, it combines the best of collective knowledge with the best of individual research; while som e twenty experts have written articles on literary genres, movements, or aspects of literary life, most of the items are the work of one man. This last feature makes for a real unity of method and tone and gives to the whole work more homog eneity From the Publisher This very useful and competent work is recommended for college and university libraries.
