It came to an end, as there is even less need of reminding you, with Her present Majesty saccession to a throne happily barred against her accession by no public or private law or usage. Prince Bismarck, in the very remarkable chapter on Dynasties and Peoples included in his Reflections and Recollections, may or may not be mistaken as to the nature of the tie between the British people and the dynasty now occupying its throne. But he most assuredly underestimates the degree in which the reign of Queen Victoria has been propitious to the conservation and renewal of the spirit that sustains the monarchical form of government in these islands, and in the empire of which they form the centre. Now, throughout the long term of its endurance, the union of which we are about to treat remained a Personal Union pure and simple, in the strictest sense of a term 1V ol. i. ch.
