Synopsis
This book provides a transcription and extensive annotations for the notes surviving from Johnson's reading as he prepared to write his preface to "Pope." It also provides a transcription of notes that he subsequently made as he prepared to write his extended study of Pope's character. Hitherto, these texts have been available only in manuscript and hence little studied.
