Synopsis

With more older adults in the population today than ever before and with predictions of a continuing increase in the future, more interest than ever before exists in the "truths" of older life. Yahnke and Eastman have responded to this interest by compiling thoughtful annotations focusing on over 150 novels, plays, stories, poems and nonfiction works here in "Ageing in Literature". In an effort to expand the evaluative commentary for each item of a scale beyond that of former guides, each annotation provides not only a summary of the literary work, but an appraisal of its relevance to an understanding of ageing. End material contains a subject index and two appendices. The subject index guides the user to those pieces which focus on a given gerontological topic (e.g. Alzheimer's, bereavement, life review), and the appendices organize the entries by "major life responses" and provide a short annotated bibliography of anthologies of literature about ageing.
