Synopsis

This resource on the primary spectroscopic methods of polymer characterization is written by a polymer expert with 25 years of teaching and research experience. The book offers a background in the fundamental and experimental aspects and applications of vibrational and NMR techniques. The book's 11 chapters cover these aspects and applications of the primary spectroscopic methods, providing state-of-the-art information on FFIR, Raman, and NMR spectroscopy. Offering the reader a practical approach, this insightful volume shows how selected techniques can solve polymer structure problems as well as explains the advantages and limitations of these techniques. From these insights, the reader learns which techniques and methods to use and which to avoid for a particular problem. In addition, the reader will learn the sampling techniques to use and the type of results that can be expected. To meet the needs of industry, academia, and government, this valuable resource covers the spectroscopic techniques used in synthesizing polymers, in particular in the characterization of the microstructure of polymers. This definitive reference will benefit those who have a basic knowledge of polymer chemistry and some familiarity with the basic vibrational and resonance spectroscopic methods, but who do not have the particular specialized knowledge that is required to apply the modem techniques.

Biographie de l'auteur

Professor Koenig received his B.A. in Chemistry and Mathematics from Yankton College, Yankton, South Dakota in 1955. His Ph.D. in Theoretical Spectroscopy was granted in 1959 by the University of Nebraska. After receiving his Ph.D., Dr Koenig was employed as a research chemist in the Plastics Department at E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company in Wilmington, Delaware, from 1959 to 1963. In 1963, Dr Koenig became an Associate Professor. In 1979, Dr Koenig was promoted to Professor in the Department of Macromolecular Science at Case Western Reserve University and was awarded the Donnell Institute Endowed Chair in 1990.

Dr Koenig has received many awards and honors during his career: in 1984, he received the prestigious Pittsburgh Society Spectroscopy Award. In 1986 he won the Alexander Von Humboldt Award for Senior US scientists and spent a year in Germany as a Visiting Professor at the Institute for Macromolecular Chemistry at the University of Freiburg. In 1991 he received the Society of Plastics Engineers Research Award. In 1992 he received the Gold Medal of the Eastern Analytical Society. In 1993 he won the Bomem-Michelson Award. In 1994 he was awarded the George Stafford Whitby Award by the ACS Rubber Division. In 1995 he was designated an Honorary Member of the Society of Applied Spectroscopy. In 1996, he received the Society of Plastic Engineers (SPE) Education Award. In 1997 he received the ACS Phillips Award in Applied Polymer Science.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This revised and updated Second Edition of the best-selling reference/text is essential reading for students and scientists who seek a thorough and practical introduction to the field of polymer spectroscopy. Eleven chapters cover the fundamental aspects and experimental applications of the primary spectroscopic methods. The advantages and disadvantages of the various techniques for particular polymer systems are also discussed. The goal of the author is not to make the reader an expert in the field, but rather to provide enough information about the different spectroscopic methods that the reader can determine how the available techniques can be used to solve a particular polymer problem. This Second Edition contains new and updated information on techniques in IR and NMR, as well as an all-new chapter on Mass Spectrometry.
