Between 1869 and 1874, Edward Cardwell, Gladstones Secretary for War, undertook major reforms to modernise the British Army.

The Crimean War, and campaigns in India, had revealed serious administrative and command shortcomings. Cardwells legislation was aimed at curing these faults and served as the foundation of a new-style army. His successors put into practice further improvements in tactics, training and command structure and by the outbreak of war in 1914, the British Army had developed into one of the best professional fighting forces in Europe.

This book details the development, composition and uniforms of this new army.

À propos de l'auteur

Gerry Embleton has been a leading illustrator and researcher of historical costume since the 1970s, and has illustrated and written Osprey titles on a wide range of subjects for more than 20 years. He is an internationally respected authority on 15th and 18th century costumes in particular. He lives in Switzerland, where since 1988 he has also become well known for designing and creating life-size historical figures for museums.
