"At the age of 17, Cecil Lewis joined the Royal Flying Corps, flew through the Somme Battle, won a Military Cross and survived the First World War, He was 20 years old. He then sailed off to Peking to teach the CVhinese to fly. Sfter 2 years, shaking off the wonders of the Mystic East, he rushed home to help found the BBC. Surviving a few years' hi-jinks with the microphone in the days when radio was fun, he retired to write 'Sagittarius Rising'. Thanks to a eulogy from Bernard Shaw, the book became a flying classic and whirled Lewis over to Hollywood where he won an Oscar for the script of Shaw's 'Pygmalion'. Then, surviving six months with glorious island girls of Tahiti, he got back to the UK to find the Second World War Brewing. He immediately rejoined the RAF, learned to fly again and taught a thousand other young men to do it too. He was then sent overseas to command units in Scicily and Greece. Writing home to his wife about a mixture of those once-upon-time beaty spots and the comedy of service life produced this volume of letters. It is the book of an established writer with a particular style which make him memorable. Still writing at 93, he admits to be proud of Sagittarius Surviving.". N° de réf. du vendeur 5088

His writing skills took him to Hollywood where he won an Oscar for the screenplay of Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. When he returned to England, WW II was brewing. Lewis rejoined the RAF as an instructor. He taught a new generation to fly, then went on to posts in Sicily and Greece. His recollection of these times, reflected in letters home to his wife, were published in 1991. Ref III 4.
