Much has been written about the Blitz on Britain in the Second World War, but few appreciate that the Germans attempted a similar campaign in the First World War. The book also covers British reaction to this, covering raids on towns and cities, and describing through first-hand accounts the tragedy, heroism and pathos which the air campaign produced.

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine. 1st Edition. In 1917 the Germans launched a major air campaign against the British mainland which shocked the whole nation and terrorized the south-east of England. These attacks by German bombers caused hundreds of deaths and injuries, but until now the full details of those raids have never been fully told. These range from the massacre of Canadian troops resting in Folkestone 25 May 1917, to the widespread carnage of shoppers a couple of miles away in the city centre. Sheerness, then a major dockyard for the Royal Navy, barely escaped a similar fate when it too was singled and a 50kg bomb struck Upper North Street School in London's Popular 13 June 1917, killing eighteen schoolchildren, many as young as ?ve years, and mutilating many more. There were many more similar tragedies which terri?ed the populace of London and horri?ed the world. This account of the German's terror campaign plus the military and political circumstances surrounding it, follows years of original and painstaking research, interviews and correspondence with those who remember that period. The First Blitz is the most de?nitive account yet of these devastating raids on an unprepared population, which were the precursor of the far better chronicled Second World War raids. b25. Britain under German bombardment is a topic associated with World War II, but in fact the Germans launched major bombing raids against populated areas of the United Kingdom in World War I, all the more terrifying because they were the first of their kind. This is the most detailed account of this air campaign ever written, containing much previously unknown information. Ref PPP 3. N° de réf. du vendeur 036721
