Exploring aspects of how class and gender relations intersect within different local areas, this work attempts to analyze the changing nature of contemporary economy and society, of its "de-industrialization", of the growth of "self-servicing" and of unemployment. Exploration is also through detailed examination of particular local areas situated in the north of the United Kingdom. A further major theme is how these processes are themselves affected by various planning and policy instruments, particularly regional policy and physical planning controls.
