This textbook gives a clear account of the manner in which knowledge in many branches of physics such as gravitation, thermodynamics, atomic physics and nuclear physics can be combined to gain an understanding of the structure and evolution of stars. A major aim is to present the subject as one in which advances are still being made. The first half is an account of the observational properties of stars and a discussion of the equations that govern their structure. The second part discusses recent theoretical work on stellar evolution. The successes of the theory are stressed, but attention is also drawn to phenomena that are not completely understood. This is a new edition of a widely-used textbook first published in 1970. New topics include mass loss from stars and close binary stars.

Paperback. Etat : Good. English The Stars: Their Structure and Evolution by Roger John Tayler is an introductory scientific text that explains the physical principles governing the internal structure of stars and the processes that determine their life cycles. Written in the context of twentieth-century astrophysics, the book connects astronomical observations with fundamental physics such as gravity, thermodynamics, and nuclear reactions. Tayler describes how stars maintain equilibrium through the balance between gravitational collapse and internal pressure, how energy is generated in stellar cores through nuclear fusion, and how these mechanisms determine a star?s temperature, luminosity, and lifespan. The book also outlines the evolutionary stages of stars as their nuclear fuel changes, discussing phases such as main-sequence stars and red giants and the possible final outcomes such as white dwarfs or other compact remnants. Intended primarily as an academic introduction for students of physics or astronomy, the work reflects the theoretical understanding of stellar structure and stellar evolution that was established and taught during the mid-twentieth century.
