Synopsis

This book sets out to tell the story of the early days of steam navigation in the Solent--a small but important chapter of maritime history which has hitherto gone unrecorded. Since few records concerning these early steamers and their service have survived the years, much of the initial research was devoted to consultation of numerous local newspapers and extraction of the names of steamers and the dates on which they were placed in service. This information and other newspaper reports provided the basis of the work and made possible subsequent reference to the few remaining official records relating to these vessels.
