Synopsis

There are now many introductory courses in aquaculture given at colleges and universities, but there isa lack of appropriate general textbooks for such courses. This book fills that gap by providing a broadand readable overview of the subject. The focus is on aquatic animal production, mainly of finfish andshellfish, but aquatic plants are also mentioned. Both fresh and salt water, warm and cool water,production are covered. The author concentrates on presenting principles, rather than providing detailon how to produce particular organisms, such as shrimp or salmon. He describes all aspects of thesubject, from business planning, through site and water systems selection, to management of thesystem once it is in operation. The interests of both developed and developing countries are covered,as is the current debate about the environmental impact of aquaculture. With extensive lists ofreferences and further reading, this book should serve as an ideal text for introductory courses.

À propos de l'auteur

Following a PhD in oceanography at Florida State University, Robert R. Stickney took roles at Georgia Southern College, Texas A&M University, Southern Illinois University and the University of Washington. He returned to Texas A&M University in 1996, acting as Professor in the department of Oceanography and Director of the Sea Grant College Program. Stickney retired in 2011, as Professor emeritus at Texas A&M, and has continued to update his introductory student textbook Aquaculture. He is a member of the American Fisheries Society, National Geographic Society, and World Aquaculture Society.
