Whether they are still operational or long-abandoned, Quarries are often dismissed as eyesores. Despite this, they can be fascinating to visit, and provide an interesting link to a once-powerful and necessary industry. Although the Romans worked quarries, it was not until the Middle Ages that the industry became established on a large scale. It then achieved its height during the nineteenth century in response to industrialisation and the associated demand for stone. The book deals with the extraction methods of various types of stone and the rise and slow decline of quarrying across the UK. While telling the history of quarrying, it also covers some of the most famous and notable quarrying sites.

Softcover Satin Finish. Etat : As New. No Jacket. Quarries and Quarrying Quarries are often dismissed as being merely dirty, dusty and noisy. Yet the few quarries still surviving employ some centuries-old methods and require great care and skill in the getting and handling of good quality stone. The Romans are known to have worked quarries, but it was not until the middle ages that the industry became established on any great scale. The greatest development came in the nineteenth century, in response to industrialisation and the associated demand for building and other materials. The quarries made a great impact on the landscape while, in a surprising number of places, stone was also mined. Whether equipment is still in use or lies abandoned, a quarry is a fascinating place to visit. This book deals with examples of four important rock types to explain the methods employed in their extraction: granite, an igneous rock, slate (metamorphic), and sandstone and limestone to represent the sedimentary freestones. Other types are mentioned, -including modern roadstone quarries which are now major features of the landscape. No Author signature. N° de réf. du vendeur MMXX-430-shire
