A great number of monuments dating from the twelfth to the twentieth centuries can be seen in cathedrals and churches throughout England, and they make up a valuable part of the country’s cultural heritage. Not only are they important as works of art, but they also throw light on many aspects of English history and life. Brian Kemp introduces the subject of English church monuments, detailing everything from matters of conservation and the making of monuments to historical developments, the changing forms and attitudes of effigies, and the symbolism of death and immortality. Includes numerous illustrations and a list of places where interesting examples can be found.

Brian Kemp is Emeritus Professor of History at Reading University, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. His interest in monuments began in his teens with the hobby of brass-rubbing, from which, realising that brasses were but one type of church monument, he soon widened his interests to include all forms of monument. In 1980 his book English Church Monuments was published by B. T. Batsford Ltd. He was President of the Church Monuments Society, 1991-6, and is now one of its Vice Presidents. He is deeply committed to the proper conservation of monuments and to englarging public awareness of their importance.

Soft Cover Colour Printed Cove. Etat : As New. No Jacket. ### Shire Publication: Church Monuments - No149 - Shire Publication - 1985 ### ~#~ Shire Publications are a great series of books that over the years have grown from 32 pages a book, the later editions page quantity varies. These books offer such a wealth of information, social history and local history and pastimes will be forgotten if these and other books are no longer available. Always well-written and researched, and this one is no exception, from the front page to the last lots of photos and drawings to inspire and use as a reference book. ~#~ Church Monuments, wonderful craftsmanship, very few are produced these days I suspect, cost would be enormous looking at those in the book. The book explains so much more on these ornate and various sizes of monuments. A book that tells it as it is in, words and pictures, great little read, highly recommended. No Author signature.
