Edward Gelles was born in Vienna and came to England with his parents just after the Anschluss in 1938. His Gelles forebears had been rabbis for centuries. The Griffels, on his mother's side, were businessmen who also had connections with ancient clans. Dr Gelles was educated at Balliol College, Oxford, where he took his degrees in natural science. His interests include European history, antiques and modern art
