Synopsis
This systematic and up-to-date presentation of non-linear elasticity meets the requirements of both practical application and mathematical rigor, providing a unified theory of the physical fields which occur in the description of physical phenomena with singularities. It also provides a straightforward simple model of continuous medium which can be studied thoroughly before developing more refined models of continua. lt will additionally introduce the reader to branches of modern mathematics relevant to continuum mechanics.
The main part of the book deals with the surface singularity, describing a regular and orientable surface moving on the continuum, and shows how the compatibility conditions for a function which suffers the singularity on the surface are derived. The classical concepts of Hadamard and Thomas, i.e. the surface of the singularity of the function and the displacement time derivative, respectively, are used. The author emphasises, in the ensuing discussion, the theory of singularities and explains the derivation of the balance laws of thermodynamic quantities with singularities. He treats the kinematic theory of acceleration waves as the formal theory of geometrical optics, and generalizes the Thomas method of the analysis of waves. The material continuum is relatively simple from both geometrical and dynamical viewpoints since no shear stresses act.
