Synopsis

From Marx and Freud to Benjamin and beyond, the interrogation of dreams has often provided the impetus for new departures in cultural theory, utopian and anti-utopian alike, looking at areas form psychoanalytic theory of daydreams to the dreams of empire that have energized the modern system. This Spring 1998 issue of "New Formations" examines some of the problems in contemporary theory, and the dilemmas inherent in attempting to arrive at new positions. Among the theorists discussed are Freud, Jameson, Said, Spivak, Derrida and Baudrillard. The topics addressed include sun-tanning and the racialized body; the politics of identity in the films of Neil Jordan; cultural theory and interdisciplinarity; Freud's "Traumdeutang"; aesthetic value and popular music; and the current state of postcolonial theory.
