Synopsis

From his first appearance on Republican platforms in Clare in 1917 Eamon de Valera was the mightiest politician in Ireland. Whether in office or out of office, in Dail Eireann or outside its walls, in old age as in early manhood, Irish people wanted to know what De Valera's view might be, how he assessed a given situation, how he would like those who supported him to act.
He was at most times a controversial man; to this day he may have as many bitter critics as he has loyal admirers. In the revolutionary years he personified resurgent Ireland; he gave dignity to a people long treated as less than free men and women by imperialism; above all he was responsible for showing to the world that Ireland was not a mere Brit¬ish province. It may be that in years to come his key role in making neutrality in war a national policy will be gauged to be even more important than his contribution to break¬ing the degrading overlordship of Britain over most of our country.
'Much of the essence of Eamon de Valera is to be found in this small volume of quotations carefully compiled by Proinsias Mac Aonghusa. I am confident it will have a wide readership especially amongst our young people on whom the future of our nation depends.' From the Preface by Charles J. Haughey.
Proinsias Mac Aonghusa, broadcaster and journalist, is the author and editor of various books including Proportional Representation in Ireland, Eamon de Valera, Na Blianta Reabhloideacha, The Best of Connolly (ed. with Liam 6 Reagain), The Best of Pearse (ed. with Liam 0 Reagain), The Best of Tone (ed. with Liam 6 Reagain), Gaillimh agus Aisti Eile and Quotations from P. H. Pearse. He works for RTE as a programmes editor. He formerly worked for the United Nations in Central Africa in connection with the liberation of Namibia.
