Broadcasting today plays a central role in promoting and defining notions of national and cultural identity. In Ireland, where identity and cultural tradition is an area of conflict and dispute, broadcasting plays this role in extremely difficult circumstances. However, the changing political configuration of Europe and the impact of new broadcasting technologies, as well as recent policy developments have profound implications for the relationship between broadcasting and notions of identity. This book records the proceedings of a symposium, sponsored by the Cultural Traditions Group and hosted by Media Studies at the University of Ulster, Coleraine, which looked at these questions in detail. In an introductory essay, 'Inventions and Re-imaginings: Some thoughts on Broadcasting and Identity in Ireland', the conference organiser, Martin McLoone provides a challenging analysis of the historical context to these debates and offers his own thoughts on future developments.Mr. Martin McLoone is a Lecturer in Media Studies at the University of Ulster, Coleraine. His publications include Media Studies in Education (Dublin, 1983), and Television and Irish Society (edited with J. MacMahon; Dublin 1984).Cover Illustration: Gerry Gleason 'Stalemate', photographed by Errol Forbes.
