English/Manx diglot in parallel columns. Spine just faintly sunned and some trivial rubbing to extremities, very clean and sharp otherwise. ' The Principles and Duties of Christianity of Thomas Wilson (born 1663, bishop of Sodor and Man 1697 till his death in 1755) takes the form of an expansion of the Prayerbook Catechism, and so was often referred to by himself and others as his Catechism. It was, as he mentions in his prefatory letter, the first book printed in Manx, the version of the Book of Common Prayer of a century earlier not attaining the dignity of print until 1893. The work is also known from the opening of the Manx title as Coyrle Sodjeh. Though no great Manx scholar himself the bishop encouraged the enterprise of publishing Manx versions of the Prayer-book and the Bible. His reference to the unsettled state of Manx spelling (the liberty which every man takes of writing after his own way') is interesting in view of the important differences between the orthography of this text and that of the manuscript of the earlier Prayerbook translation, but with minor variations this English-based spelling became the norm and confirmed the isolation of Manx from its sister dialects in Scotland and Ireland.
