Bart H. Vanderveen?s encyclopaedic work celebrates the machines that were actually built to venture beyond the tarmac, into forests, deserts, battlefields, construction sites and just about anywhere sensible people decided not to take an ordinary car. Published by Haynes in 1986, this is a wonderfully detailed survey of post-war cross-country vehicles from around the world. It covers military workhorses, rugged utility vehicles, specialist four-wheel drives and obscure mechanical marvels that were engineered with all the elegance of a cast-iron filing cabinet but the determination of an over-caffeinated mountain goat. Beauty, it turns out, is entirely optional when your primary objective is to climb a muddy hillside whilst carrying half a ton of equipment. Vanderveen was one of the foremost authorities on military and commercial vehicles, and it shows.
