Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. Angus Clifford Racey Helps (illustrateur). 1st Edition. Diggy Takes His Pick - Racey Helps, Medici Books for Children, 1964 First Edition Publisher: The Medici Society Ltd., London ISBN: 0855030186 (later reprint identifier; this is the original 1964 edition) Format: Paperback, 24 pages, colour illustrations throughout Series: Medici Books for Children Condition: Very Good A delightful and charming first edition of Diggy Takes His Pick by the beloved English children's author and illustrator Racey Helps. Written and illustrated by Helps himself, this 1964 title is part of the highly collectible Medici Books for Children series, known for their whimsical woodland animal stories and vibrant, detailed watercolour illustrations. About the Author/Illustrator: Angus Clifford "Racey" Helps (1913-1970) was a prolific British creator of children's literature. Born in Bristol and educated at Bristol Cathedral School and the West of England College of Art, Helps began storytelling as a child and later worked in the antiquarian book trade before devoting himself to illustration and writing. He is renowned for his gentle, engaging tales featuring anthropomorphic woodland creatures?rabbits, moles, hedgehogs, foxes, and more?brought to life with his warm, expressive artwork. In addition to books, Helps produced numerous postcards, greeting cards, jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, and wrapping paper for The Medici Society and others. His style evokes the tradition of Beatrix Potter and other classic British illustrators, with a focus on simple, moral tales full of humour, adventure, and seasonal charm. This book exemplifies his work perfectly. Story Summary: In this heartwarming Christmas tale, the kind-hearted but sleepy mole Diggy Winks is invited to spend the holiday with his rabbit friends Timothy and Lettice Bun and their neighbour, the hedgehog Pinny Needlekin. When Diggy oversleeps through the festive season, a series of snowy adventures ensue involving a mischievous fox (Mr. Cunningleigh-Sligh), a stolen pudding, and plenty of seasonal cheer. The story is told with gentle humour and ends on a joyful, redemptive note?perfect bedtime reading for young children. Physical Description & Condition: This is a genuine 1964 first edition paperback (Ref. 558, printed in England). The book measures approximately 21.5 cm x 18.5 cm and contains 24 pages with full-colour illustrations on every spread. It includes the full series list on the rear cover (early version with fewer titles), title page with character names (Lettice, Diggy Winks, Timothy Bun, Pinny Needlekin), and all original text and artwork intact. Condition Details - Very Good overall: Covers: Bright pictorial front cover with only light edge rubbing and minor shelf wear. There is a noticeable but small red pen stain at the bottom edge of the spine (visible in photos; does not affect the interior or text). Spine: Tight and intact. Interior: Clean and bright pages with no foxing, tears, or major creases. All illustrations are vivid and undamaged. There is a neat name inscription inside (on the front endpaper or title page area?see photos for exact details; "Sarah Taylor" adds a personal vintage touch without detracting from readability). Overall a very attractive copy for its 60+ years, suitable for collectors or as a gift for fans of vintage children's literature. Minor signs of age and handling are present but it remains well above average condition for this scarce title. Early Medici Society printings like this are increasingly sought after. The series captures a golden era of British children's publishing, and Helps' self-illustrated works are prized for their nostalgic appeal. This copy retains all its original charm and would display beautifully. Photos are provided and form part of the description?please review them carefully for exact condition. A lovely addition to any collection of Racey Helps, Medici Books, or mid-20th-century illustrated children's stories. N° de réf. du vendeur ABE-1784116465484
