Hardback. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. First Edition. 1974. First edition. xxi, 164pp. plus 2 double-page family trees, a frontispiece by Edward Ardizzone and 38 black and white illustrations. George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair (1903-1950). Before the First World War, his family moved to Shiplake, Oxfordshire, where Eric became friendly with the Buddicom family, especially their daughter Jacintha. Growing up together, Buddicom and Blair became idealistic adolescent sweethearts, reading and writing poetry together, and dreaming of becoming famous writers.Blair also enjoyed shooting, fishing and birdwatching with Jacintha's brother and sister. This book is the first full account of Orwell's boyhood days, by Jacintha Buddicom. The book is bound in the original brown boards with a gold design on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the top of the spine and a heavy dent to the top front spine corner that has caused a small bit of damage. The contents are tight and clean with a name, place and date neatly written on the front free endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear with light soiling and the spine is faded. There is slight fading along the top 1 1/2" of the front of the wrapper with a small darker patch where an old price sticker has probably been removed. The spine ends are bumped with a tear of about 1/4" on the top front spine corner and there is a 1" tear on the top rear edge. The tears have been repaired on the reverse with document repair tape. About the book >.>.> GEORGE ORWELL, one of the outstand-ing writers of the age, has become a sym-bolic figure. There are many expositions of his political influence, his literary effect, his later years: even of his schooldays at St. Cyprian's and Eton. One aspect of his life, however, remains obscure: what was the boy Eric Blair really like at home and with his young friends of those days? Those writing of George Orwell have found little illumination, and he himself left no detailed account of his boyhood. Jacintha Buddicom reveals that Eric Blair was an aloof and undemonstrative boy, self-sufficient and lacking the herd-instinct, he required no wide circle of friends. Nevertheless, at the age of eleven, in Shiplake, he observed a family of child-ren to whom he apparently took a parti-cular fancy. These were the Buddicom children Prosper, a year younger than himself, and the two girls: Jacintha, small for thirteen, and Guinever, aged seven. With some ingenuity he contrived to make their acquaintance: and fro. N° de réf. du vendeur Batch-FM653-VG-13465

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition. Hardback octavo. Original publisher's cloth boards with unclipped dust jacket. xxi, 164pp. Beautifully illustrated throughout with a frontispiece by Edward Ardizzone, 38 black-and-white plates, and 2 double-page family trees. his highly important biographical memoir provides an unparalleled, intimate look at the formative childhood and teenage years of Eric Arthur Blair (George Orwell). Written by his closest childhood confidante, Jacintha Buddicom, the text offers a crucial counter-narrative to the traditionally bleak depictions of Blair's youth, portraying him instead as a happy, deeply literary, and imaginative young companion. The memoir tracks their close bond from their first meeting in 1914 until 1922, when Blair's sudden departure to serve as an imperial police officer in Burma caused the pair to lose touch permanently until just months before his premature death in 1950. Condition Report: Fine / Fine. A nice example. The hardback binding is clean, tight, and square, completely free of shelf wear. Internally clean; pages are bright and crisp, entirely free from foxing, handling marks, or contemporary ownership inscriptions. The original dust jacket is an even colour, unclipped, free from the spine-fading, chips, or edge tears common to this title. A near flawless example of a vital piece of Orwellian biographical history. p. xxi numbered pages (comprising the title page, copyright data, contents, and the extensive introduction), 164 numbered text pages (some library logs stretch this to 169 pages if they count the unnumbered blank terminal leaves at the very back); 1 Frontispiece illustration by the famed artist Edward Ardizzone.38 Black-and-White Plates printed across 16 pages of gloss photographic inserts bound into the text block.2 Double-Page Family Trees detailing the Buddicom ancestral lines.
