In England, 1650- to 1690 was a period of turmoil, the aftermath of a Civil War, and a King's execution: Protectorate, Restoration, a King's expulsion and the Glorious Revolution - all within a working lifetime . In Portugal times were equally troubled. In 1640 the Portuguese had risen in revolt to recover their independence from Spain. The struggle continued for 29 precarious years. During this time England and Portugal, old allies, drew together in common enmity for Spain. The alliance culminated in the marriage of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza.

In Portugal times were equally troubled. In 1640 the Portuguese had risen in revolt to recover their independence from Spain. During this time England and Portugal, old allies, drew together in common enmity for Spain. The alliance culminated in the marriage of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza. The alliance offered the English King and his subjects the prospect of riches: Lisbon remained the centre of the trade with India and the Orient, Africa and Brazil. British merchants gradually got the better of their rivals, especially the French and Dutch. When the Inquisition ruined the Portuguese 'New Christians' (Sephardic Jews who had been Portugal's principal middlemen) the British came to dominate the onward traffic into Europe of Portugal's rich overseas trade. From Portugal came much of Britain's wealth in the early 18th century, such that when the Great Earthquake destroyed Lisbon, the London Magazine could write of this 'most visibly rich of cities' as 'the only city in the world, out of the British dominions, by which so tremendous a shock could have so affected us.' This book is the fruit of researches into British and Portuguese archival sources extending over many years. Dr Shaw's scrupulous manner heightens the events and circumstances she describes. Her grasp of detail allows her to get beyond regulations, treaties and diplomatic exchanges, to depict the lives of the British merchants, and of their consul, the quarrelsome, unshakeable Thomas Maynard. In that period, they had to deal not only with the familiar risks of trade but, on sea, with the perils of seizure, piracy and shipwreck and, on shore, with the corruption of custom officials, the partiality of judges and the unpredictable threats to life and property of the Inquisition.
