Lucian lived in the second century AD and though his mother tongue was probably Aramaic he was famous for his witty satire and polished Greek. The aim of this selection is to produce a representative coverage of some of Lucians best work, particularly those pieces not available in recent editions or translations. Five of the nine works offered are examples of the comic, satiric dialogue as that was Lucians forte, but also included to illustrate the authors versatility are an autobiography, a satirical discourse, a description of a painting and a major work of literary criticism. Greek text with facing-page treanslation, introduction and commentary

Aris & Phillips, Oxford, 2010. Reprint 1st ed.1991. IV,316[. Paperback. Series: Aris & Phillips Classical Texts. Nice copy. ?The editor?s intention is to offer not necessarily ?the best of Lucian? but rather a representative selection, which will show him as wit, satirist and literary artist, and at the same time make available some works not readily available in English sections; this is sensible. The text is M.?s own OCT, and a simplified apparatus is provided. The translations, all new, are perfectly readable and also scrupulously faithful to the text. There is a reasonable substantial introduction, and introductions to individual works add much to it. M. gives a resolutely ?conservative? account of L. (?). M. knows Luciat at least as well as any other contemporary scholar, and that knowledge is put to good use in the commentaries where he brings out the very frequent reminiscences of classical literature and constantly directs our attention to L.?s use of similar material elsewhere, to illustrate his technique.? (B.P. REARDON in The Classical Review (New Series), 1992, p.438). From the library of the late Prof. Dr. Ludo De Lannoy. N° de réf. du vendeur 64121
