Synopsis

This book is designed to support trainee doctors during the Foundation Stage of postgraduate training, including preparation and application for Specialty Training posts, and covers the generic (non-clinical) aspects of postgraduate education, training and professional development. It shows trainees how the generic skills fit into professional practice and development and how the knowledge base provided by the book underpins professional practice. The book will assist the development of the knowledge, skills and competences required for good medical practice and uses case studies, activities and policy examples to illustrate key learning points.

À propos de l?auteur

Judy McKimm is Associate Professor and Pro-Dean, Health and Social Practice, Unitec, New Zealand. She is also Visiting Professor of Leadership and Healthcare Education at the University of Bedfordshire, Honorary Professor of Medical Education, Swansea University and Professor of Medical Education, Oceania University of Medicine, Samoa. She is an experienced medical educator, who previously worked as Director of Undergraduate Medicine at Imperial College Medicine, co-ordinating the development and implementation of a new undergraduate medical programme. She subsequently worked for the Higher Education Academy as a Senior Adviser (Accreditation and Standards) and managed a very successful national project on leadership development for health and social work professionals. She is a highly experienced teacher and professional developer who works in the UK and overseas on leadership, education and health reform projects. She teaches, advises and acts as an external examiner on a range of postgraduate programmes on leadership and medical/healthcare education. Judy initially trained as a nurse and in advanced psychotherapy training. Honorary Senior Lecturer and Consultant Anaesthetist, Leeds General Infirmary, Clinical Training Advisor Yorkshire and Humber Deanery. She is co-author of Essential Guide to Acute Care 2nd Ed , Essential Guide to Generic Skills and How to teach continuing medical education ; co-editor of the ABC of Geriatric Medicine and Essential Guide to Educational Supervision . She was awarded a three year University Teaching Fellowship in 2006 and a HEFCE award to improve opportunistic teaching. In 2007 led a successful bid for a mini-project fund from the Higher Education Academy. She is involved in teaching and assessment in all years of Leeds university medical school and is external examiner of Hull York medical school.
