Hardback. Etat : Good. Reynolds Stone Wood Engravings (illustrateur). The Turn of the Years ? The Seasons? Course and As Old as the Century (1982) Reynolds Stone & V. S. Pritchett (Michael Russell) ISBN: 0859550850 Condition: Good (pages calm, soul faintly weather-beaten) Vendor of genteel oddities: Crappy Old Books At first glance, The Turn of the Years looks like the sort of slim hardback that lives on the ?nice? shelf ? the one with the serious poetry and the inherited china you?re afraid to touch. Inside, however, it?s quietly more eccentric: a collaboration between Reynolds Stone , master of wood engraving, and V. S. Pritchett , master of the beautifully digressive sentence, with an introduction by Paul Theroux for extra literary seasoning. The book is essentially two pieces in one elegant package: ?The Seasons? Course? ? a series of wood engravings by Reynolds Stone, following the year as it mutters its way from winter to spring, summer to autumn, and back again. Bare trees, full foliage, fields behaving themselves in black and white. The countryside, but in that intensely composed, carved way that makes you suspect the birds are better dressed than you are. ?As Old as the Century? ? an essay by V. S. Pritchett, reflecting on a life roughly as long (and occasionally as baffling) as the 20th century itself, full of memory, anecdote, and the sort of wise, slightly wry prose that sounds best when read in an armchair while pretending not to fall asleep. Together, they make a kind of pocket-sized meditation on time: one half looking at the turning of the natural year, the other half looking at the turning of an entire century and the human who somehow survived it. Your copy, as supplied by the ever-unapologetic Crappy Old Books , is graded Good ? which in our world means: The boards are still presentable and attached (a quality we increasingly wish on politicians). Expect some light shelfwear, maybe a nibble to a corner, but nothing dramatic. The pages are all there, calmly bound, perhaps gently tanned like someone who?s had the good sense to age indoors. Any dust jacket, if present, is doing that ?slightly rubbed, still game? thing that suits small English books and elderly aunts. No one has (as far as we know) tried to colour in the wood engravings, draw moustaches on any notable figures, or use the margins for shopping lists. You may find a neat previous owner?s name, which only adds provenance and the faint suggestion that this book has already seen more peaceful winter afternoons than you have. This is the sort of volume that appeals to: People who like seasons but would rather admire them from inside, ideally with central heating. Fans of fine printing and wood engraving , who will happily spend ten minutes staring at a hedge rendered in hatch marks. Readers who like their memoir-ish prose thoughtful and unhurried , without anyone oversharing on page one. The irony is that this quietly refined little book ? engraved woodcuts! reflective essay! small Wiltshire press! ? is now being offered to you by a place called Crappy Old Books , whose business model is essentially ?lovingly pass on other people?s better taste? Michael Russell produced it in 1982 as a tasteful homage to art, memory, and the passing year; we?re mainly hoping you have a spare bit of shelf and a passing fondness for things that smell faintly of paper and respectability. Adopt this Good -condition copy of The Turn of the Years and you?ll get: Twenty-odd pages of beautifully cut countryside One civilised essay from a man who has seen a lot and is in no hurry to brag about it And the calming sense that time moves on, years turn, centuries pass, but small handsome books from small eccentric presses somehow keep turning up? usually at places like Crappy Old Books. Crappy Old Books: where the seasons change, the century turns, and the stockroom remains vaguely untidy. THIS BOOK BEARS THE CRAPPY OLD BOOKS STAMP. IF THAT IS UNDESIRABLE PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS. THE STAMP MARKS WHICH IS USUALLY TO THE FRONT AND BACK INNER PAGES SAYS SOLD BY CRAPPY OLD BOOKS WITH WEB SITE URL. IT IN NO WAY DEMINISHED FROM THE READING. IF YOU WANT A PRISTINE BOOK, PLEASE FIND ANOTHER BOOK IN BETTER CONDITION SOMEWHERE ELSE. N° de réf. du vendeur 5126
