Inside, however, it?s quietly more eccentric: a collaboration between Reynolds Stone , master of wood engraving, and V. S. Pritchett , master of the beautifully digressive sentence, with an introduction by Paul Theroux for extra literary seasoning. The book is essentially two pieces in one elegant package: ?The Seasons? Course? ? a series of wood engravings by Reynolds Stone, following the year as it mutters its way from winter to spring, summer to autumn, and back again. Bare trees, full foliage, fields behaving themselves in black and white. The countryside, but in that intensely composed, carved way that makes you suspect the birds are better dressed than you are. ?As Old as the Century? ? an essay by V. S. Pritchett, reflecting on a life roughly as long (and occasionally as baffling) as the 20th century itself, full of memory, anecdote, and the sort of wise, slightly wry prose that sounds best when read in an armchair while pretending not to fall asleep. Together, they make a kind of pocket-sized meditation on time: one half looking at the turning of the natural year, the other half looking at the turning of an entire century and the human who somehow survived it. Your copy, as supplied by the ever-unapologetic Crappy Old Books , is graded Good ? which in our world means: The boards are still presentable and attached (a quality we increasingly wish on politicians).
