Hardback. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. First Edition. THE TWO FORGERS A Biography of Harry Buxton Forman and Thomas James Wise. John Collins. Scolar Press, Aldershot. 1992 First Edition ISBN 0859677540 318pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is in exceptionally FINE condition in an equally FINE unclipped dustwrapper. Henry "Harry" Buxton Forman CB (11 July 1842 - 15 June 1917) was a Victorian-era bibliographer and antiquarian bookseller whose literary reputation is based on his bibliographies of Percy Shelley and John Keats. In 1934 he was revealed to have been a major source of forged first editions of Georgian and Victorian authors in partnership with Thomas James Wise (1859-1937). Thomas James Wise (7 October 1859 - 13 May 1937) was a bibliophile who collected the Ashley Library, now housed by the British Library, and later became known for the literary forgeries and stolen documents that were resold or authenticated by him. This fascinating investigation was written by John Collins who was an antiquarian bookseller with Maggs Bros of Berkley Square. Ref R1. N° de réf. du vendeur 005330

Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm, xiii, 317 pp, ills, facs. From the blurb - "The Two Forgers describes the lives and careers of two very different men who came together in one of the greatest frauds in the history of book collecting. Harry Buxton Forman worked in the late Victorian era in the Post Office, rising to be Comptroller of Packet Services. In his spare time he was a serious literary scholar who edited Keats and Shelley. Thomas James Wise was a commodity dealer in a firm which specialized in essential oils (used mainly in perfumery and for flavouring). He was also one of the most influential book collectors of his generation, and President of the Bibliographical Society. This fascinating book describes how Wise and Forman joined forces in a conspiracy to forge a wide range of first editions of Victorian authors. The course of this conspiracy is traced and is related to each man's biography. The Two Forgers also contains an account of the sensational unmasking of the plot in 1934. It re-tells a remarkable passage of literary history and re-interprets it in the light of recent research." A presentation copy (to Esther Potter, Graham Pollard's partner inscribed and dated by the author on the front free endpaper "Esther from John, 5.v.93". Very Good in slightly used dustwrapper.
