The futuristic opera Victory Over the Sun, first staged in 1913, was a key event of the Russian avant-garde, important for its libretto, for its fragmentary, modernistic score and for the unprecedented sets and innovative costumes by Kazimir Malevich. This book offers new insights into the theatre practice and history of Russian Futurist performance, which has received little attention by theatre scholars to date, but which had a discernable influence on Russian and European theatre of the early to mid-twentieth century. As well as an annotated translation of the libretto, the book includes reproductions of the score and contemporary newspaper reviews.
