Synopsis

This three-volume abridgement is considerably shorter than the original ten-volume set. In an effort to preserve as much of the text as possible, the first things to go were the notes, the bibliographies and the indexes. The bibliographies of the original edition are, in some cases, 30 years old and hardly as indispensable and up to date as they once were. In terms of the text itself, the aim has been to redress a certain imbalance in the original, "with its strong Germanic bias", which is to say that "the history of the Church in Germany gets rather more fulsome accounting than does that of the Church elsewhere." Not so in the abridgement. In addition, every effort has been made to make the abridged edition read more easily than the original. In certain cases the names of historical figures have been changed to more familiar forms. This three-volume set covers the Early Church, the Medieval and Reformation Church and the Church in the modern world.
