A powerful document of theday-to-day realities of Black women in Britain
The Heart of the Race powerfully records what life is like for Black women inBritain: grandmothers drawn to the promise of the 'mother country' in the 1950stalk of a different reality; young girls describe how their aspirations atschool are largely ignored; working women tell of their commitments to families, jobs, communities. With clarity and determination, these Afro-Caribbean womendiscuss their treatment by the Welfare State, their housing situations, theirhealth, their self-images - and their confrontation with the racism theyencounter all too often. Here too is Black women's celebration of their cultureand their struggle to create a new social order in this country.
Beverley Bryan is a Professor at the University of the West Indies, and the author of Between two Grammars: Language Learning and Teaching in a Creole-speaking Environment (2010).
