This volume provides a critical analysis of the nature and implications of a European political identity in diplomacy and international relations. The political and cultural diversity of the states which constitute Europe (as distinct from the European Community) would appear to be an obstacle to unification. However, it is argued that dualism will force European unity in order to safeguard its security in the context of increasing global economic and military power struggles. The book is divided into four main themes: theoretical dimensions of and applications of dualism in European political thought; the history of political ideas; the role of dualism in contemporary issues and debates; alternatives to dualism.

This book focuses on the problems and issues surrounding the idea of Europeanism. The theory that common values would form the basis of a single European identity is argued against and the contributors concentrate on dualistic distinctions, especially the dichotomy of friend and enemy in European political and international thought, and suggest alternatives to them.
