This work makes a contribution on the literature on ethnicity and communication policy. As well as looking at how ethnic minority communities are represented by the media, the book focuses on the programme-making activities of people from those communities. This hitherto neglected perspective therefore investigates the levels of access and participation ethnic minorities experience in media institutions and careers. The book reveals the similarities, in ethnic-political terms, of the exclusionary practices of multi-ethnic nation states. The main features of the book include international comparative case studies, an examination of exclusionary policies in media systems, insights into the political economy of ethnic minority media production and a contribution to the theoretical analysis of the relation between mainstream and ethnic-minority media in multi-ethnic societies. The book should be useful for those concerned with an understanding of the role of the media in multi-ethnic societies. As such it is relevant to all broadcasters, academics, teachers, researchers, students working and researching in mass media and communications policy and to those whose primary concern is with ethnicity, racism and multi-cultural studies.
